Drake’s OVO Sound label houses four artists currently: Drake, PARTYNEXTDOOR, Majid Jordan and ILOVEMAKONNEN. It’s a group of artists who have little in common other than that they all make music that’s unique. There are plenty of cliques and collectives in hip-hop today, but none really as exclusive as October’s Very Own. It’s unclear what exactly goes into Drake’s decision to bring new artists in, but when he does, it’s usually unexpected.
Keeping in mind that Drake likes to move in silence, there’s been a couple of hints left here and there that suggest he’s got his eyes on one new artist in specific. That artist’s name is Bryson Tiller.
Bryson Tiller’s SoundCloud presence dates back to 2011. He put out a mixtape in that year, but I’m going to leave the title anonymous because like PARTYNEXTDOOR’s early work, the music found on it might as well be by someone completely different because it in no way represents his current sound. Sometime in 2014, he had a sonic epiphany.
His reinvented sound made its debut in the Fall of last year. Since then, he’s dropped five original songs and two freestyles/remixes. His original music fits the vibe of a lot of what’s currently coming out of the OVO camp — a mix of influences from R&B and hip-hop made unique by the respective artist. Take for example “Don’t.”
He can really sing, he can really rap, his production choice is top-notch; it was only a matter of time before he caught the ears of somebody with some pull. Earlier this year, Drake hit young Tiller on Twitter with a DM reading, “Man, I been f*ckin’ with ‘Don’t’ for months, G.” Bryson shared a screenshot on Instagram.
Let the rumors begin. Who knows how Drake’s working relationship really started with current OVO artists PARTYNEXTDOOR, Majid Jordan, etc., but it’s very possible that it started just like this.
Then, just this week, Drake’s producer, musical partner and longtime friend, 40, invited Tiller to his mansion. There, Drizzy gifted Bryson with a rare pair of OVO Jordan sneakers. He shared a picture of them on Instagram with a caption reading, “Last night was special. 40 invites me to the crib, then Drake shows up and blesses me with these. Sneaker dreams and life dreams both fulfilled at once.”
Who knows what went down at the mansion, but it wouldn’t be too crazy to guess that some business conversation may have went down. Maybe they worked together on new music? We’ll have to wait and see, but Bryson Tiller’s Trap$oul project is expected to release soon.
