Roc Nation’s Elijah Blake has been somewhat quiet since releasing his absolutely stellar debut project Bijoux 22 back in 2012. He’s been working, though. With plans to release an EP this year and a debut album at the top of the next, it’s safe to say that you’ll be hearing a lot of the soulful crooner’s voice this year.
Today, he releases a double music video for new songs “6” and its outro, “Fallen.” The heart-wrenching visual is a look into the dark childhood of a man who’s rarely ever seen not smiling in videos and interviews. 24 year-old Blake opens up in the realest way possible on the new song(s) from his forthcoming Drift EP, singing
“Six years old and I lied about the school grades
I told my momma that my daddy already reprimanded me
And when my father found out he beat me with a belt of leather
Until my arms bled open and it caused my back to bleed”
When asked about his biological father and whether he had heard the song yet during a new interview with Billboard, Elijah revealed that he had not. He also went on to say that his father was not a “deadbeat,” but rather a man “stuck in his ways.”
Drift will release in September, with an official release date and new video from the project set to drop in two weeks from today. Songs About Melody, his debut album, is slated to drop first quarter 2015.
